Encouraging Young Women's Interest in Science and Technology. GirlsTech
(GirlsTech.douglass.rutgers.edu) is a website that explains and demonstrates
a framework for use by teachers, parents, and other adults to evaluate
electronic resources (web sites, CD-ROMS, and games) that will encourage
young women's interest and participation in the sciences and technology.
The website describes eight evaluation criteria with which to assess electronic
resources, provides examples that illustrate them, and rates the examples.
GirlsTech is based upon a research study on girls and the use of technology,
supported by Douglass College and the Girl Scouts of the USA through a
grant from the Toyota USA Foundation. A summary of the research, an explanation
of the theory behind it, and a bibliography are also available on the
site.

This project gives actual activities used by students, such as "Granny
Did What?" that suggests students research traditional folk remedies and
medicines, examine possible scientific reasons for the effectiveness of
some traditional treatments, and familiarize students with the properties
of some household herbs, spices, and plants.
