As NJ SSI has evolved and matured, the implementation of national and state standards has taken on new meaning and significance. The introduction of the New Jersey Core Curriculum Content Standards in Mathematics and Science, and accompanying Frameworks, has led to a variety of programs and services designed to implement the Standards. Regional Centers, Specialty Sites, and the NJ SSI Central Office offer a series of targeted technical assistance sessions during the school year to introduce/promote higher level, instructional strategies, and accompanying curriculum and assessment materials. These experiences lead to in-depth, standards-based professional development summer institutes for teams of teachers and administrators run by the Regional Centers and Specialty Sites. Other supportive services run by NJ SSI PARTNERSHIPSHIPSHIPS include parental involvement programs such as the NSF funded FANS (Families Achieving the New Standards) Program.

Our Standards Implementation Grants program promotes use of standards-based curriculum, instructional practice (including team learning, hands-on explorations, discussions, scientific experiments and problem-solving) and assessments. NJ SSI provided grants to 30-35 districts in each of the 1997-98, 1999-2000, 2000-01, and 2001-02 school years. Grantee districts are required to match SSI funds, form school leadership teams, purchase exemplary instructional materials and provide 60 hours of professional development to the teachers who will use the materials.

Districts in our Partnership Program for Excellence in Mathematics, Science and Technology are encouraged to apply for a Standards Implementation Grant to partially fund their strategic plan.
